We have two daughters, Keayra and Kaylan, one son-in-law Jesse, two beautiful granddaughters, Kaileigh and Kapri and an amazing grandson Jayce. When I am not teaching, I enjoy doing things with my family and friends, traveling, arts and crafts, reading, decorating, and volunteering. I am a very active committee member with the iwantfoundation.org which is a Breast Cancer Organization started by two relatives. I am a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc and Texas Southern University.
Sickle Cell Disease has been around for five thousand years, and few people are aware of this disease and its devastating affects; especially on the mouth. Those who suffer from this disease and the Trait, tend to remain silent because they feel misunderstood. A Sickle Cell Crisis is a very painful episode which is usually preceded by long periods in the hospital. They are often refused treatment at local emergency rooms because they are labeled as drug seekers. Our presentation will bring awareness to this disease and hopefully a better understanding of the needs of the Sickle Cell

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that effects African Americans, Spanish Americans, Mexican Americans, and Asian Americans. This genetic disorder has been barely recognized, misunderstood and blatantly unknown to dental professionals and a lot of the public. Sickle Cell Disease is a health condition that is not inclusive on most health history questionnaires. Even if it was on the health questionnaire, most clinicians and the public do not have a clue about the precautions associated with the disorder. A Sickle Cell Crisis is a serious condition and requires hospitalization. Some people with the disease prefer to remain anonymous because they do not want the stigma that is sometimes associated with it. Our goals and objectives are to educate all professionals and the public about this genetic disorder so that we will have a better understanding and can offer the well needed support to this unknown population.

Houston ISD
Health Science CTE Teacher with HISD since 2016 AAS Degree in Health Information Technology - Houston Community College 2010 Certified Professional Coder, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, Certified Medical Administrative Assistant 25+ Years' Experience in the Medical Administrative field
'Real-world experience' is what we give our students, right? As health science teachers, we all know the struggle in finding or obtaining certain resources in order to masterfully teach our students. In this session, we will focus on the heart of ANY medical setting- The Electronic Health Record. The EHR is the central component of the health IT infrastructure. Health information is the data related to a person's medical history, including symptoms, diagnoses, procedures, and outcomes. A health record includes information such as: a patient's history, lab results, X-rays, clinical information, demographic information, and notes. Last, and most important, we will focus on certifications in Medical Billing and Coding- where we transcribe the data into codes for financial reimbursement. In other words, WE handle the BUSINESS of Medicine!
