Valley Fever (VF), a respiratory infection, is attributed to inhaling the pathogenic fungus Coccidioides. The fungus predominantly thrives within the soil of the southwestern United States and certain regions in Central America. Favorable environmental conditions, characterized by wet winters and hot summers, coupled with strong wind patterns, create ideal circumstances for the proliferation and dispersion of its spores. In this activity, you will use DNA electrophoresis as a diagnostic tool to screen soil samples from various regions for VF's genetic signature, assess the prevalence in these geographic areas, and learn about the human impact of this disease.

Strategies to Prevent Teacher Burnout
Deborah Hunt
Fort Bend ISD
I am a wife and mother of 4 sons. I have two grandsons and one granddaughter. I have a bachelor’s in business management and an MBA in Healthcare Management. I am a Certified Medical Assistant and a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist. I bring to you more than 38 years of healthcare experience. I have been a Program Director of Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, and Medical Billing and Coding Programs in Higher Education. I am also an adjunct college professor. I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve as a Director of Operations for a Federally Qualifying Health Care Center, which provides healthcare to communities that face healthcare disparities. Realizing I love training and development, I became a high school educator. I believe teaching should be inspired. Inspired teaching does not come from a particular philosophy, theory, or set of materials. Inspired teaching comes from teachers who analyze their students and their situations and create an environment that meets their needs. My goal is to create an environment to meet every child’s needs. I proudly serve as the Area 2 Board Member for Texas HOSA. I am also the Area 2 Director for the Texas Health Occupations Association.
Teaching can be demanding, and teachers often underestimate their role as influential figures in their students' lives. Lack of self-care can lead to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and poor performance. Let's discuss strategies to prevent burnout and develop a self-care plan.
