She describes herself as overjoyed to be a part of such a noble field and hopes to improve the quality of care across the industry through both her research and as a local leader in driving health procedure improvements.
For over a century, bacterial viruses (bacteriophages or, simply, phages) are considered an effective treatment for bacterial infections. In stark contrast, most countries typically administer antibiotic chemotherapy for the treatment of bacterial infections. As nursing students, we have noticed that antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens is an increasing clinical problem and alternative approaches to antibiotic chemotherapy are needed. One approach is to explore the use of lytic bacterial viruses known as phage therapy as an alternative intervention for infectious diseases and wound therapy.

Many opinions exist on what to call the current generation of students. Educators can agree there are specific traits that define this group of wonderful students as unique (and often CHALLENGING): HIGHLY tech-savvy; SPEEDY Multitaskers, SHORT Attention Span. Concerning research suggests that they READ less than 20% of text; they think in 4D, not 3D; and they often DEMAND immediate feedback. Goals for this interactive, fast-paced session include discovering best methods to recruit, engage, and retain students in relevant and rigorous HANDS-ON, MINDS-ON Health Science programs. Includes demo-account access, and an invitation to a special event later in July!

My favorite part of also being a healthcare provider is teaching families health prevention and health maintenance. As an Health Science High School instructor, I strive to teach students the health care basics needed to become certified and join the healthcare industry as phlebotomists, EKG technicians, or Patient Care Technicians. Thus, giving them a strong foothold as they continue their healthcare career goals in post secondary education.
In our session, we will provide ways to improve your students' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through ELLevation strategies which we have adapted to be health science specific. These methods have shown to improve student comprehension, engagement, demonstration of skills, recall and retention. Using ELLevation strategies fine tunes the details in specific health science content and skills.

Prepare your students' brains to learn new course content with this effective generative learning strategy. Generation happens whenever someone attempts to answer a question, solve a problem, or predict an outcome BEFORE being shown the solution. The learner applies what is already known to a new situation by looking at the new characteristics and thinking 'where have I seen something like that before?' A fun and engaging generation activity for the HSE classroom is TEAM TRIVIA!

This workshop will group participants in teams to play Health Science Trivia. Members of the winning team will be rewarded.

This is my fifteenth year as a Secondary CTE Health Science Instructor. I initially started in my hometown of Edinburg, Texas, and was active in my HOSA Chapter (2009-2017). Served as Area 7 Board Member for Texas HOSA for 6 years and Texas HOSA Board President in 2017. During my tenure, I contributed to committee goals in planning, implementing, and working on strategies for the educational needs of students as well as teachers. I was fortunate to mentor a HOSA State Officer (2015-2016) and it was an opportunity to work collaboratively in various aspects of Leadership committee meetings and planning. I relocated and moved to San Antonio in 2021 and have been blessed with greater opportunities in my teaching strategies. I currently teach at Tom C. Clark High School with NorthSide ISD. I teach a Theory / Clinical Rotation and two CCMA classes. I love to search, learn and be creative with ideas to make learning in the classroom fun, life-like, and interesting for my students. I often get asked by other instructors for guidance on the ideas I share on my social media page and I think that's the greatest compliment! I attended THOA conferences as a HOSA Board Member when it was first moved to College Station and this past summer 2022 I had a fantastic time at the conference!
Are you needing some creative and fresh ideas for your students in the classroom? Let's focus on concepts in teaching other than the traditional textbook, PowerPoint, and/or worksheet. My purpose is to assist you whether you are a new or seasoned teacher we could all use some stimulating ingenious ways of demonstrating skill in healthcare. I want you to gain insight and learn to trust your instinct and save you trial & error time in my demonstrations. My goal is for my attendees to walk away from my session excited, supported, and confident.

Emma Carter
The CTE Preceptor, LLC
I am a health science teacher and district lead in a large suburban high school. I came to Texas for a job as an athletic trainer at the high school level. Fast forward ten years, I married a football coach, had one son, and one on the way. There was no way I could keep up the schedule of an athletic trainer with two small children and a head football coach. I knew I was going to teach at some point in my life. Like many of you, I have several advanced degrees. All three of my degrees are in education. I was 36 when I started teaching, but I had the advantage of being around high school student-athletes for years. The transition to the classroom was —interesting. I began teaching Principles of Health Science and Clinical Rotations by myself. I had support from the administration and several core subject teachers, but it is not the same as having an experienced teacher in your subject area. Through the years, I have made my share of mistakes, or what I refer to as miscalculations. I love to incorporate activities, movement, and technology into my lessons. I have evaluated my classroom management techniques, course planning, and teaching resources for over a decade of teaching Health Science. I am passionate about helping new and experienced teachers to progress in their teaching skills and confidence in the classroom. I look forward to sharing my teaching miscalculations and my teaching wins.
Review activities are a fantastic tool for summarizing material and preparing students for an upcoming assessment. Multi-level questions allow you to review more material with fewer questions and allow students to use critical skills. These activities will have students working together, moving, and applying knowledge and skills. The activities can be used for any topic year after year to save you time and effort. You will leave this presentation with a review activity you can use in your classroom.

This workshop will group participants in teams to play Anatomy & Physiology Trivia. Members of the winning team will be rewarded.

Overfelt has since returned to her her home town high school in the Fall of 2022 and was charged with revamping the health science program and establishing a certification program students could complete before graduating. Looking forward to this next school year, we will have health science practicums in EMT and CCMA with the addition of another teacher. In her spare time, Misty enjoys spending time with Jerry and their families and friends. She also enjoys taking part in competitive shooting events, hunting, and working on the family farm/ranch.
It happens in a matter of seconds, shots ring out, screams & chaos ensue. It's something we never want to be a part of, and you have access to all kinds of medical supplies in your room/closet. We can stop the dying and be the first to start treating the injured and bleeding and help manage 1st aid & triage patients. Once the threat has been isolated and/or neutralized, then we can begin providing medical aid to those most seriously injured, likely before the first responders even get there. We know that seconds matter in life and death.

Having a variety of games in your toolbox makes it less likely that students will become bored. We will show you ways we use Gimkit, Quizlet, Blooket, and other activities in our classrooms. Many of these programs use repetition and active learning strategies to help students commit items to memory. These games can be played individually or in teams, promoting collaborative learning. Working together to answer questions and solve problems is also beneficial for students who may struggle with the material. The students think they are just playing games, but we know we are having them do repetitive practice!
